The cost of the survey depends on the size of the vessel, its age and location. As different vessel types vary, so do the fees depending on the complexity of the vessel model. Our rates are very competitive with the SE Central Florida Region. Please remember "A survey is a wise investment" and is small percentage of your purchase price.

After the initial contact, arrangements will be made to conduct a survey on a specific date and time and at a specific cost. Surveys must be paid for in advance or on the day of the completed survey. When possible please arrange to present a clean, ship shape boat with the batteries fully charged and cabled. Also have all papers for the boat and systems ready for review. Lockers and cabin areas should be cleared of all miscellaneous gear and open to inspection.  Arrange for surveyor’s access, owner’s permission to board, keys and a ladder if in dry dock. Also any past copies of completed surveys would be beneficial.

  • Equipment is tested at the discretion of this Surveyor - if no sea trial is conducted.
  • Extensive moisture testing on fiberglass and wood hulls will be billed at $75.00/hr
  • Electronic corrosion surveys will be billed at $75.00/hr
  • Spars and Rigging on sail boats are surveyed from the deck level only using high power binoculars. (A complete rigging survey is recommended on all sailing vessels that have not had a recent survey.
  • It is recommended that propulsion and auxiliary engines be inspected by a qualified engine surveyor/technician. We do offer engine oil spectrometer analysis at a cost of $50.00 each sample. (Samples are usually turned around in 24 hours.)
  • It is recommended that all vessels be hauled out for bottom and running gear inspection.
  • All boatyard charges for hauling, pressure washing, destructive testing and any affiliated services or fees are not the responsibility of this surveyor.
  • Center console and outboard boats get special lower rate.

ADDITIONAL TESTING AND ANALYSIS
Gasoline Engine Compression Testing & Analysis

A separate qualified marine technician should survey all engines and out drives on pre-purchase surveys.

Oil Analysis

An optional Oil analysis can be very beneficial in determining the internal condition of engines and transmissions. It is also a great way to establish a baseline analysis for used boats to measure future oil analysis against. A small sample of warm oil is extracted and sent to a lab where a spectrometer analysis of all contaminants is conducted. The oil analysis report can identify internal problems and is much less expensive than hiring an engine surveyor. The test is performed for 9 elements, 6 wear metals, and 3 contaminant metals. The oil should not be fresh oil and the need to know the type of oil and the number of hours used when taking the oil sample is recommended. The oil report is can be ready in as little as 24 hours if expedited, but is normally ready within 48 hrs of obtaining the sample and can be shared with an engine surveyor or mechanic to determine necessary repair costs.

Sea Trial

A Sea Trial is recommended for pre-purchase surveys. The sea trial will demonstrate the handling characteristics of the vessel as well as provide valuable information regarding the vessels operating systems, engines, cooling systems, transmissions, vibration, steering, instrument operation as well as direct observation of oil, coolant or water leaks. A laser temperature gun will be used during the sea trail to report temperature readings  taken across the engines, transmissions and generators to report over heating and to provided a more extensive look at the engines and transmissions while under load. The engines are operated at various speeds while readings and observations are made by the surveyor. The sea trial usually takes about 1 1/2 to 2 hours to complete. Following the sea trial the survey is amended to include all findings and discoveries during the sea trial.

Non-Destructive Metal Hull Ultrasonic Testing
(CVS) Condition & Value Survey Included

Per Foot

$20.00

Non Destructive Ultrasonic Testing

Steel, Aluminum, Fiberglass

Ultra sonic testing or audio gauging for determination of actual material thickness, such as on a boats bottom or hull, to determine a percent value of steel or aluminum wastage from the natural elements of hull aging and delaminating of fiberglass. The ultra sonic meter, coupled with its probe and a conductive agent, gives the technician a “readout” of actual material thickness to within three decimal points of inches or millimeters. All of our meters are self-calibrating or sent out annually for calibration.

Do the hull surveys provide an estimate of the remaining

service life for the Steel Electrics?

The hull condition surveys are a snapshot in time; they are not intended

to predict the remaining service life of the vessels. The marine survey

firm, International Inspection, provided hull survey reports that outline

the results of the inspections, noting all deficiencies, recommended

repairs and a summary of corrective action that addresses the

recommendations. The reports document the current condition of the

vessels, but because of the nature of marine operating conditions and

the variables that contribute to vessel condition and certification, it is

not possible to provide an estimate for how many years the Steel

Electric class will continue to pass USCG inspections and remain in

safe operating condition.

Consulting Services

Surveyor consulting services are provided on a hourly cost basis. Sometimes prospective buyers ask a surveyor to "walk thru" a vessel with them without a formal report to get an objective opinion of a vessel or a specific component or to inspect a previous repair of a vessel before deciding to purchase.
